We’re accustomed to supermarkets having bottleshops.
But in 1862, when Newham’s first general store opened, it was the other way around: the store was attached to the newly built Newham Hotel.
Owned by Scottish brothers Walter and John Brydon, the hotel was on the corner of what are now Rochford Rd and Dons Rd and operated under various owners until 1928. It was later destroyed by fire.
The present Newham General Store was built in 1990 on the site where the Brydon brothers’ hotel and store once stood.
