Horticulturalist Duncan Cocking, who runs Kyneton-based Leaf, Root & Fruit, explains how to grow peas during the cooler months.
Pea plants will grow all year here in the cool temperate climate of the Macedon Ranges. The plants will grow strong and healthy regardless of the season.
But there’s a catch. If the plants are flowering when the frost bites, the flowers will be damaged. So if I grow plants and they flower in the depths of winter, I won’t get any peas from them.
This is why I sow my first crop of the year in July. This leads to plants flowering in spring, when frosts are less severe and I’ll get to pick some pods.

Happy gardening!
