As part of a series on smartphone photography, professional photographer Tiffany Warner explains an alternative approach for capturing trees.
Next time you’re out and about and you spot a beautiful tree, instead of stepping back and taking a photo of the whole tree, why not try something different?
What I love to do is get underneath the tree and capture the canopy with the sky as the backdrop.
Get up nice and close, move your phone around until you are pleased with what you see on the screen, then tap the screen to focus on what you want to be the star of the photo.
In this image of a Japanese maple, I focused on the largest leaf and framed around it. I like to go slightly off-centre to create more interest. By getting up close, I was able to capture the beautiful details of the veins and textures in the leaves.
💡 Tip: Try positioning yourself under a tree canopy and shoot upwards through the leaves. Get in close to emphasise the texture and details.
Happy snapping!
