Welcome to Your Macedon Ranges for Monday, February 7, to Sunday, February 13.
🚗 One of the biggest classic car shows in Australia, the Picnic at Hanging Rock show, will take place on Sunday. Thousands of cars, bikes, and trucks will be on display. And if you’re on the Calder Freeway on Sunday morning, the traffic will look a little different as many of the classic vehicles make their way to Hanging Rock in convoys from about 7.30am.
🎨 Are you a painter or photographer? Entries are now open for Woodend Lions Club’s 47th art show, which will be held next month. You can submit work until March 2 by downloading an entry form from the Lions Club’s website. Good luck!
🏏 It’s Pink Stumps Day in Lancefield on Sunday. The afternoon of family fun begins with a high tea. Two Lancefield cricket teams will be in action on the oval, and there will be live music, a jumping castle, a raffle and a silent auction.

How am I doing?
Your Macedon Ranges is researched, written, and edited by me alone. Compiling it takes me 10+ hours each week. I love doing it, and the response has been incredible. I’m very grateful for your kind words.
If you find value in the newsletter, I’d so appreciate you subsidising my coffee habit … it helps with the collating and the writing!
A factory with star quality
PAST TIMES
With thanks to Romsey & Lancefield Districts Historical Society. The society meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10am-2pm, at the courthouse, in Main Rd, Lancefield.
The first condensed milk in Australia was produced in Romsey on September 4, 1882, at a new two-storey corrugated iron factory built by the Melbourne Milk Supply Company.
Cheese and butter plants would be added later on the nine-acre site, which was adjacent to the Romsey-Lancefield railway.
Romsey Butter Factory operated until 1960, when the machinery was moved to Kilmore. The large double-storey building was dismantled in the early 1980s and the remaining buildings burnt down later that decade.
Several TV movies and series featured scenes filmed at the butter factory: A Descant for Gossips (1983), Street Hero (1984), My Brother Tom (1986), and The Flying Doctors.
📘 Fay Woodhouse’s book Romsey: An Historical Guide tells the stories of 55 buildings and landmarks in Romsey, and the families behind the businesses that occupied them. (Published 2021, $40.)
