Welcome to Your Macedon Ranges for Monday, July 29, to Sunday, August 4.
🛍️ The streets of Trentham will be illuminated on Friday night for Winterfest. In addition to a lights display, shops will open late and there will be live music and German-style street food.
⛰️ It’s four months until the second Mountain Festival is held in Macedon. The first festival was a sell-out two years ago, when the speakers and performers included Peter Garrett, Shane Jacobson, Scott Pape, Sarah Wilson, Costa Georgiadis, Evelyn Araluen and Jacinta Parsons. The festival organisers have promised there will be more big names and famous faces this year. Click here if you’re interested in sponsoring the festival or making a donation.

How am I doing?
Your Macedon Ranges is researched, written, and edited by me alone. Compiling it takes me 10+ hours each week. I love doing it, and the response has been incredible. I’m very grateful for your kind words.
If you find value in the newsletter, I’d so appreciate you subsidising my coffee habit … it helps with the collating and the writing!
The universal provider
Then & NOW
With thanks to Romsey & Lancefield Districts Historical Society. The society meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Lancefield courthouse, in Main Rd, Lancefield.
This building in Romsey is now a bistro, but for 79 years it was owned by the White family and operated as a general store.
William White bought the Hall of Commerce, as it was then known, for £30 in 1869, and he and his wife Sarah ran it alongside an auctioneering business. From 1908, the shop also served as the local Registry of Births and Deaths.
When William and Sarah’s second son, Fred, joined the business, the store was renamed from The Full and Plenty Store to F. A. White. Later it became Fred White Universal Provider.
The general store remained in the White family until 1948. William White also owned the Lancefield Chronicle & Romsey Advocate for 10 years from 1872. He and his family are remembered by the elm trees planted in Main St in 1874.
Today, the old general store is home to Verdure, and the adjoining house that once belonged to the Whites is occupied by a firm of accountants.
