Theatre The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race: When Penny Anderson returns to her hometown of Appleton as the new GP, she’s shocked to find the local potato race still awards $1000 to men and only $200 to women. In her determination to change this, she clashes with locals like Bev, who sees her as a city slicker disrupting country ways. Mountview Theatre, Smith St, Macedon. 8pm-9.30pm. AURORA
Professional photographer Tiffany Warner explains how to capture the majesty of aurora australis.
📍 Mount Macedon
Seeing an aurora in Victoria is rare – especially in the Macedon Ranges – so when I heard there was a chance to catch one earlier this month, I was excited.
I captured this image with my iPhone set to night mode for three seconds; any longer and the stars might have appeared as dashes rather than dots.
I held the phone up to the southern sky and could see a pink glow. That’s my trick for spotting an aurora: it’s often more visible through the lens than to the naked eye.
It was nice to have some trees in the foreground to add visual interest, but I framed the photograph so that the pink sky was in the middle and remained the real hero.
💡 Tip: If you’re searching for an aurora, hold your phone to the south and look for the colours in the sky.
