It’s time to get bare-rooted
GARDENING
Horticulturalist Duncan Cocking, who runs Kyneton-based Leaf, Root & Fruit, discusses what to consider when selecting fruit trees.
The optimum time to establish an orchard is in winter – particularly July and August – when deciduous trees are dormant. Then they will have a chance to develop a strong root system during spring, before the onset of summer.
Winter is also when there’s the greatest availability of bare-rooted fruit trees. Bare-rooted trees are cheaper because you’re not paying for a pot and potting mix. You’ll find them in retail nurseries from the start of June.
If you’re thinking about planting fruit trees, don’t buy just any old tree from the bargain bin. Make sure it is on the correct rootstock so that it doesn’t grow too big and so that it is going to fruit at a time of year that suits you. Check out this summary of what’s important (and what’s not).
In many situations, just 10 well-chosen trees will allow you to pick fresh fruit from your own garden all year round. But don’t overdo it. The more trees you have, the more work is involved.

🎭 MACEDON: Hollywood star Hugh Jackman has given a shout-out to a theatre production in Macedon. Jackman said The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race, which will open this week, was “a gem of a play”. “It will move you, It will make you laugh. You will laugh your heads off. It’s directed by a great mate of mine that I went to drama school with, Mark Constable, who is awesome. He told me to say he’s a genius. He’s great.”
🐕 TRENTHAM: Two dogs have been reunited with their family after one became trapped in a mineshaft in the Wombat State Forest. Rescuers were alerted by the persistent barking of Penny, a labradoodle, who stood guard while Ted, a labrador, was stuck below.
