Each volunteer will receive a festival pass for Sunday, November 17, as a thank you. To volunteer, email Olivia at events@mrva.com.au. ๐ธ Do you enjoy visiting local gardens? Here are three to see in November. On the same weekend, you can enjoy the garden at Durrol, in Mount Macedon, and retired landscape architect Bruce Honey’s garden at Verdicus in Tylden. How am I doing?
Your Macedon Ranges is researched, written, and edited by me alone. Compiling it takes me 10+ hours each week. I love doing it, and the response has been incredible. I’m very grateful for your kind words.
If you find value in the newsletter, Iโd so appreciate you subsidising my coffee habit … it helps with the collating and the writing!
The red-brick ruin on the road to Malmsbury
PAST TIMES
With thanks to Malmsbury Historical Society.
Three signs decorate the crumbling walls of the red-brick ruin on the road into Malmsbury.
The first, facing you as you leave the village, points you towards the freeway. The second, on the opposite end of the building, directs you to the local tourist trail. And the third, above the entrance, warns you to “keep out”.
Many years ago, though, visitors would have been welcome to enter and stay for a while.
The ruin was once the Racecourse Hotel, built in 1860 and one of the first hotels reached by travellers coming from Kyneton. As its name suggests, the hotel thrived on trade from the local racecourse, which was on the site now occupied by the former youth justice centre.
The Racecourse was delicensed in 1893 along with five other Malmsbury hotels. The adjoining stables have long since disappeared.

Macedon Lodge executive chairman Mark Player said Mr Dixon wanted to test the market for a buyer or business partners. The horse training centre is being marketed with a valuation above $30 million.
๐ ROMSEY: Romsey Ecotherapy Park has won the Regional Achievement Award at the 2024 National Landscape Architecture Awards.
