The Commercial Hotel was the first brick building in Trentham. It stands on the left of High St, on the brow of the hill, as you enter the village.
Sorting out the post
The building now occupied by Merchants of Malmsbury was the home of the Malmsbury post office for almost 100 years.
Grog and groceries
We’re accustomed to having supermarkets with bottleshops attached. But in 1862, when Newham’s first general store opened, it was the other way around.
To health and happiness
The Commercial Hotel in Lancefield was commandeered for use by the health services during the Spanish flu of 1919. The first two patients didn’t need admitting, though – they were the hotel’s licensees.
Last one standing
Malmsbury Hotel was one of many hotels threatened with closure as part of a licensing reduction program. By June 1936, it was one of only two that remained in the village.
At your service
Malmsbury Bakery started life as a general store called Malmsbury Cash Store. The bluestone footpath installed outside is still there today.
